Tabla comprises two drums, the ‘Dayan’ and the ‘Bayan’; each is made of wood with a typical cylindrical shape and a narrow neck supporting a rounded head. Both drums have a black circular spot called the ‘shai’, which affects the sound quality. The Dayan is tuned to a specific pitch, depending on the composition and preference of the performer, while the Bayan is played with variable tension to produce different tones. Tuning the instrument is as unique as the playing technique. Learn tuning, intricate rhythmic patterns, tails, and many more; take online Tabla lessons from the best players across the industry.
